Beastie Boys

I just wasted some time trying to get Beastie Boy tickets for when they play at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Sadly there were no tickets for me.

Skateboarding is not a Crime?

Ok so a week ago was Go Skateboarding Day(June 21), apparently no one told me about it because I would of dusted off my Mike Vallely everslick and popped some ollies, that is if my old man knees could of handled it.

So on Go Skateboarding Day, it seems that a group of skateboarders in Arkansas got a little more than they bargained for. They got hassled by a cop and a few of them got roughed up and arrested. Now when I say rough up I mean they got choked, thrown to the ground, and threatened with being maced. These boys and girls were only 13-16 and from my view didn't deserve the amount of force that was used, regardless of whether they gave the lone cop a hard time or not(which I'm sure they did give the cop a hard time). But really getting a 14 year old girl in a choke hold come on.

Now I'm the first to admit that a pack of skateboarders can be loud, obnoxious and have a f*ck you attitude when they are skateboarding. Growing up my friends and I have been hassled by cops/security guards while skateboarding, but we never gave them any lip. We just politely moved on, found another skate spot and would come back again when the cops/security guards where gone. See the thing is that yeah alot of cops out there are jerks and like to abuse their power but for the most part if your cool towards them they'll be cool back, sometimes it is really that simple.

So below is a video of the incident that took place in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Also below is the contact information for the Hot Springs Arkansas Police Department, just incase you want to let them know how you feel about this incident.

No Music, No Art, No Sports!

So this morning, a friend of mine over at Mercy Rule's blog sent me an email about how his towns government, Stoneham, Massachusetts has eliminated sports, music and art programs from their towns budget. It's really unfortunate that it is these programs, that can really make a difference in a kids life are always the first to go. It is these programs that alot of kids love and look forward too, while at the same time keeping them out of trouble. If it wasn't for the art classes or the sports programs that I participated in, while in school I wouldn't be were I am now or have the life long friends that I have. You can find out more information about this at savethespartans.com.

Wonders of the Deep

It's been awhile since I've given you a real good time wasting activity. So in order to break that drought here's something worth your while. This time wasting activity comes straight from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. At their website you will find a bunch of live cams that you can check out. There is the penguin cam and my favorite the sea otter cam. There are also other live cams that you can check out too. So while your sweating away in a hot office this summer go check out some of the live cams and waste some time.

Glasshouse(Charles Stross)

Here's my first book review, well actually it's not a complete review since I didn't finish the book. Ok I know I had mentioned in my previous blog, well actually here's the exact thing I said:

"I'm one of those people that will sit thru an entire move or read a book once I start it, even if I don't like it."

Well I lied, that isn't always true. I started a book a few days ago and read about 30 pages of it. I had to stop. I just couldn't read any more of it. It was just horribly bad. I had read reviews of it and it said it was a great read, a must read in fact. I think those reviewers were either smoking crack or wanted to date the author. Now I don't want to say much else about the book or give it too much "air" time. I will give you this, the name of the book is Glasshouse by Charles Stross. It's a Sci-Fi book. Mr. Stross is trying to follow in the footsteps of WIlliam Gibson(who I really like), except that he has failed miserable. He filled his book with too much Sci-Fi mumbo jumbo and not enough story. Maybe if I stuck with the book, I would of ended up liking it, but if you can't capture your audience in your first paragraph than you've failed.

Fast Food Nation
(2006, Richard Linklater)

This won't be a long review because there really isn't much to say about this film. All in all this film was pretty boring. I'm one of those people that will sit thru an entire movie or read a whole book once I start it, even if I don't like it. Well this was one of those movies. I kept looking at the timer to see if it was almost over. Richard Linklater probably would of been better off making a straight up documentary based on the book of the same name, instead of making a movie based on the ideas and facts put forth in the book.

So all in all I'd be lying if I said that this movie didn't have it's moments but your time would be better served by just reading the book Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser instead. The book was one hundred times better than the movie, but isn't that always the case.
