New Photography Rules for NYC?

If your involved in photography you might want to check this out:

The NYC Mayor's Office of Film , Theater and Broadcasting are considering some new rules in regards to photography and filming in the city. As it is and has been for some time you do already need a permit for any photography and film shoots, in which a tripod/camera stands, lighting and rigging equipment will be used. What the Mayor's Office of Film , Theater and Broadcasting are trying to do is to formalize the existing policies in order to cope with large increase and often chaotic aspect of filming/photographic work taking place in NYC. The problem that alot of people are having in regards to these new rules however is with the vagueness of the way the rules are written.

The new rules that are being consider however are stating that any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour need to get a city permit and insurance. The same requirements would apply to any group of five or more people who plan to use a tripod in a public location for more than 10 minutes, which includes the time it takes to set up the equipment. These new rules could in effect with the way they are currently worded, depending on whether a police officer or not wanted to enforce it, pertain to tourists, amateur photographers or some people just filming the next YouTube hit. So when a family of 4, visiting NYC for the first time stop in Times Square or Rockefeller Center to snap a few pictures could be in violation of the new rules.

You can read more about it here in a NY Times article and also on the NYCLU's web site.

There is also a petition you can sign if your against these new rules.

Give me Liberty or Give me Safety.

Ok before some history buff puts his 2 cents in, let me say that this quote is often attributed to Mr. Franklin although it hasn't been confirmed that he is in fact the one who came up with it. With that said and regardless of who said it why don't you waste some time this weekend and mull this quote over in your head. Just how much of your personal freedoms are you willing to give up in order to give yourself and the country a sense of safety?

Alec Soth - Blog

If you've heard of Alec Soth(ryhmes with both) at all it probably has to do with the fact that your interested in photography. Alec seemed to burst onto the photography scene with the publication of his book Sleeping by the Mississippi and has since gone on to publish a couple more photography books. The other day I went to go check out his website and while there I noticed that he also had a blog. Well once at his blog and after reading a few posts I was hooked. His blog is a great mix of, well as he puts it photographica, miscellanea, etcetera. If your interested in photography, film, art and philosophy then I highly recommend checking out his blog. If your not interested in any of that stuff well maybe you should check out his blog any way, you never know you just might like it.

Henry Rollins Interviews Serj Tankian and Tom Morello Pt.1

Here's a great interview of Serj Tankian(System of the Down) and Tom Morello(Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave) done by Henry Rollins(Black Flag/Rollins Band). Well actually the parts were Serj and Tom talk are great, but Henry Rollins is a horrible interviewer. He should really stick to what ever else he does, be it spoken word poetry or lifting weights. The only good thing about him is he has the pull to be able to get some really cool people to interview. Anyway, Serj and Tom talk about their Axis of Justice project and also about political activism in general.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a new EP out entitled Is Is. The songs on it aren't exactly new, they're songs that they've been playing live since 2004. The versions of the songs on the EP are however reworked studio versions so they don't exactly sound like the ones they've been playing live. You can check out a couple of the new songs on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs MySpace page. They are also going on a mini tour in the US, unfortunately I won't be able to go check them out because the ticket prices are a bit steep for me, which sucks because they are playing right near me.I would of loved to have heard the new songs live because from what I've heard so far of the EP they are pretty awesome.

Here's a video of one of the new songs, entitled Down Boy.

Transformers
(2007, Michael Bay)

So yesterday I got my geek on and went and saw Transformers the movie. I had grown up watching the Transformers cartoons, in the morning getting ready for school and I was excited to see a live action version of them. This movie was directed by Michael Bay, now I will be the first to admit I'm not a big fan of his movies, but he did an awesome job with this one. It was funny, action packed and the special effects were just out of this world. The ending battle/fight scenes between the Autobots and Decepticons was just spectacular.

The movie also featured some fresh new break out stars. I'm sure the reason they went with little known stars was because most of the money went into the actual Transformers characters. There was Shia LeBeouf, who is primed to be a big star especially after his break out role in Disturbia and now with the hit Transformers. I would also highly recommend watching him in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, you can see a review I did on that movie a while back ,here. There is also the required eye candy for all action movies and this was provided by Megan Fox. New comer, Rachael Taylor was also in the movie too and I had wished they used her more in the movie, she had a nice combination of intelligence, beauty and she can act too. Some great comedic relief was provided by Anthony Anderson. The movie also starred Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight and John Turturro.

So if you want to go see an action packed fun filled summer movie, my advice would be to go see Transformers. This really isn't a movie that you wait to see when it comes out on DVD, it's one that you should really see on a big movie screen with surround sound.

Free Blockbuster Rental

We all like getting free stuff, hell sometimes even if I don't like what it is I just take it because it's free. I think that might be because I have some undiagnosed medical condition, but that's a topic for another blog. Anyway, the other day while stumbling around on the internet I found this hack you can do in order to get a free Blockbuster Rental. All you have to do is go to www.mycokerewards.com and type in this code:

100084616172235

A word of note in order for this to work you do need a My Coke Rewards account, but it's free to get if you don't already have one. So if you like movies and enjoy getting free things give this a try.

665, the number of Santa?

Just the other day I stumbled upon some interesting trivia concerning one of my favorite bands from the 90's, Soundgarden. It had to do with their first full length studio album Ultramega OK. On that album are 2 songs that are titled 665 and 667. They named those two songs with those numbers as a joke, they thought that the idea of heavy metal being obsessed with black magic and satan was hilarious. So figuring that 666 is the number of the beast, that 665 and 667 must encompass something satanic also.

The song 665 is actually a parody of music tracks containing so called hidden messages from Satan if played backwards. When you play this song in reverse, you can hear Chris Cornell screaming such things as "Santa is my King" and "I need you Santa baby" and other things. Take a listen to it but be warned listening to the following may cause you to do evil things, like put candy canes in people's socks.

Color Me Kubrick
(2005, Brian W. Cook)

Color Me Kubrick is the truish story of an Englisman named, Alan Conway. Mr. Conway, during the mid-90's was a con man who would go around telling people that he was the reclusive world famous director Stanley Kubrick. The funny thing about this story is that Mr. Conway was openly gay and bore no physical resemblance to Stanley Kubrick nor did he know a great deal about his films.

This film follows Mr. Conway around on a number of adventures where he impersonates Mr. Kubrick, from the time he told a heavy metal band that he was going to make them famous to when he was going to produce a Las Vegas show for a closeted gay musical comic. This film was alright, not outstanding the only reason I would tell someone to see it would be to watch John Malkovich in the lead role. He plays Alan Conway and is just simply amazing to watch. His campy over the top performance hilarious and is comedic genius.
